LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Taylor Gas wants to make sure you — and your HVAC system — feel like family.

Founded in 1950, Taylor Gas has been part of the St. Mary’s County and Southern Maryland community ever since. The company, founded by Francis and Loretta “Tiny” Taylor, started by delivering small tanks of propane throughout the area.

Their sons later took over the company and expanded it during the housing boom. Another generation of Taylors brought in additional service options and added HVAC to the company’s offerings. Along the way, Francis and Loretta Taylor were named “Pillars of the Community,” and the entire family has woven charity work and community service into their lives.

It’s also how they run the company.

“We treat customers the way we want to be treated,” said Sara Carter, current chief financial officer and granddaughter of Francis and Loretta Taylor. “We’re part of this community. We see people out at the grocery store or at events. They’re our neighbors, and we have an obligation to them that other companies in the area don’t have.”

Today, Carter runs the company alongside her father, Frank; her uncle, Bernard; and her brother, Scott. Together with about 25 employees, they all wear “all the hats,” something Carter says helps prepare each of them for anything customers might need.

“If you call us, you get a person right away,” Carter said. “We aim to make sure there’s always someone there for you.”

That customer-first approach extends to emergencies as well. Taylor Gas offers an emergency service line, which Carter said has been especially important during this summer’s heat waves as homeowners have dealt with struggling HVAC systems in extreme temperatures.

When it comes to HVAC, the company is also focused on educating customers and helping the whole home, not just one piece of the system. Rather than simply selling services and solutions, Taylor Gas wants people to better understand their HVAC systems so they can make informed decisions and keep their homes comfortable for years to come.

“Maintenance is really important,” Carter said. “You want to protect your investment and protect yourself from unexpected things happening. A lot of the time, huge repairs will start out as small issues, but if you’re getting routine maintenance, our techs would see that early and save you the money and the headache of your air conditioning going out on a 100-degree day.”

Plus, Carter added, seasonal maintenance helps systems run more efficiently, improves indoor air quality and, maybe most importantly, helps protect the manufacturer’s warranty.

“We want to be the ones people think of that they can trust to give them the right information. We take time to educate customers about their options. That way they know what’s best for them and can make the best decision for themselves and their homes.”

For Carter and her family, the goal is the same today as it was when Taylor Gas first opened its doors more than 75 years ago: continue serving the community with dependable service and earn the trust of every customer they meet.

  1. This is such a fantastic philosophy on customer care and HVAC maintenance! It makes complete sense that focusing on education and preventive check-ups rather than just quick sales helps homeowners avoid the absolute nightmare of an AC breakdown during a brutal heat wave. Catching minor issues early not only protects your investment and warranty, but it also ensures your family stays safe and comfortable when temperatures peak. Thanks for sharing such a valuable look at proactive home care!
