LA PLATA, Md. — The La Plata Police Department has once again earned national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), marking the third consecutive time the department has received the prestigious recognition.
The accreditation was officially awarded on July 25, 2026, following a comprehensive assessment and review by CALEA’s Board of Commissioners during its conference in Omaha, Nebraska.
Often regarded as the gold standard in public safety, CALEA accreditation recognizes law enforcement agencies that meet rigorous national standards in leadership, policy development, training, operations, community engagement and accountability.
Police Chief Matthew Norris said the achievement represents much more than a certificate earned every few years.
“CALEA accreditation is not simply an award earned every few years; it is an operational roadmap that guides every aspect of our organization,” Norris said. “It requires commitment from every member of our Department, the support of our community, and collaboration with our stakeholders. Maintaining accreditation ensures that the La Plata Police Department continues to operate under nationally recognized best practices while providing the highest level of service, professionalism, and accountability to the citizens we are privileged to serve.”
Department officials credited the accomplishment to the collective efforts of sworn officers, professional staff, Accreditation Manager Jacquelyn DeSoto, Major Michael Payne and every employee who contributes to serving the La Plata community.
The department also thanked residents, local businesses, elected officials and community partners for their continued trust and support throughout the accreditation process.
