Leonardtown, Md. – February 28, 2020 – The new Leonardtown Library is coming along nicely! The grand opening is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28. The current Leonardtown Library at 23250 Hollywood Rd. will be closed starting Monday, April 6.
Beginning March 9, you will not be able to place holds for pickup at Leonardtown (you can still pick up at Charlotte Hall or Lexington Park, or any other library in Southern Maryland!). Check out St. Mary’s County Library website for more info about the transition.
The project site is on the 141 acre Hayden Property off Leonard’s Grant Parkway within the corporate limits of the Town of Leonardtown.
The new library and senior activity center will be an integrated state-of-the-art facility for information resources, education and senior activities. The library will have meeting rooms, technology infrastructure throughout for visitors of all ages, a vending café, a hi-tech specialty classroom, and dedicated areas for adults, teens and children. The senior activity center will benefit from the close proximity of the library, and will also provide exercise, aerobic and fitness rooms, spaces for arts and crafts, as well as quiet rooms. The senior activity center will also provide lounge areas and a commercial kitchen.
The facility will also include outdoor terrace areas, ample parking and linkage to future recreational facilities planned for the County property on which it is being constructed. In addition to the construction of the facility and its associated site improvements, the project will also extend the Town of Leonardtown water main from the adjacent school site to Hollywood Road (MD 245).
Thank you to the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County (CSMC) for allocating the funds to build a new library for St. Mary’s County. The new Leonardtown Library will be located off of Leonard’s Grant Parkway in Leonardtown, right next to the new Duke Elementary School. The building will contain both the new 29,730 square foot Leonardtown Library and the Garvey Senior Activity Center.
Through a competitive grant process, St. Mary’s County Library has received $1,591,000 in funds from the Maryland County Library Grant Program to add to the County allocated funds for the new library.
Grimm and Parker (G&P) has been chosen as the architecture firm for the project, and Tuckman-Barbee has been chosen to fulfill the $16.9 million construction contract. Construction should be completed within 540 days of the start. A groundbreaking was held Tuesday, May 15, 2018
