ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. – Local resident, Lily Belle McDowell, has had a hard past few years. Her passion for field hockey left her with two extreme concussions that have taken a lot of painful steps to overcome. From relearning cognitive skills to overcoming ongoing vertigo, this young lady has looked fear and confusion in the face and pushed on. She is a living example of not being a victim of circumstance, and while in recovery, continuing to aid the community that she deeply cares for until she was able to take her life back into her own hands.

This all led to McDowell becoming a contestant in The Miss Maryland Teen USA, which takes place on Friday, May 31st. She is using this opportunity to inspire others to stay resilient and strong through trying times, no matter what obstacle comes their way.

When asked why she chose this platform, McDowell was quick to answer, “From a young age, I have found my calling on the stage, which has provided me with a lifelong passion for public speaking, music, and performing. I started performing in musical productions and with my choruses, and I am now currently in Potomac Voices, the chamber choir at Leonardtown High School.”

“My experiences onstage musically and leading others through public speaking as Class President and a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student Visionary Candidate leader have allowed me to use my passion and skills to connect with and support my community, and have also given me valuable experience and confidence on stage.”

“I am passionate about Miss Maryland Teen USA because it provides me with a unique platform to advocate for concussion awareness and resilience. Having endured multiple concussions myself, I know firsthand how important it is to raise awareness about the dangers of these injuries and it is vital to provide sufficient support for those who may be struggling with concussion, as this type of serious injury is often overlooked,” stated Belle.

“Success hasn’t been easy for me, the concussions I’ve endured hindered my ability to do schoolwork as a straight-a student and be the student-athlete that I was. Nevertheless, these setbacks fueled my passion to become a stronger and more resilient person. Participating in Miss Maryland Teen USA allows me to showcase my resilience and to become an inspiration for others who may have faced similar struggles. I am truly determined to utilize my platform to raise awareness of the important signs of concussions, and how to overcome such with helpful support and encouragement. I hope to inspire others to live their lives with resilience and courage in the face of adversity.”

Although it’s not about the accolades, McDowell has racked up an impressive amount, accomplishing many great feats such as winning Maryland’s Relentless for a Cure Team Member Award 2023, becoming Leonardtown High School’s 2025 Class President three consecutive years in a row, Fly4ACure LLS Co-Candidate, National Honor Society Treasurer, and a member of the Varsity Field Hockey team.

McDowell had some thoughts about her journey and what it has given to her.

“I have learned that each success, or loss, has a valuable impact in growing as an individual. Through my successes, I’ve learned the importance of hard work, perseverance, and goal-driven thinking. On the other hand, losses have taught me resilience and to always be thankful for every opportunity, even if they don’t quite go your way. Both have truly helped me grow as a person and I am grateful!”

Her advice to young girls following in her footsteps?

“You can achieve anything if you set your mind to stay true to yourself and your values. It’s vital to believe in yourself to achieve your dreams, especially when you are young! Most importantly, make sure to surround yourself with supportive friends and family who believe in you and encourage your dreams.”
