2017 Calvert Fair Idol winner Avion Keemer

Barstow, MD – It was on his third attempt that Prince Frederick resident Avion Keemer finally hit the high note. His versatile vocal range wowed the crowd as Keemer performed a 41-year-old rhythm and blues classic in his “own special way.” Keemer’s renderings of two songs, including Heatwave’s 1976 ballad “Always and Forever” earned him the nod from a panel of three judges at the eighth edition of Calvert Fair Idol Saturday evening, Sept. 30, taking the top prize of $1,000 from contest sponsor, G.H. Clark Contractors.

“I want to thank everybody who came out,” said Keemer, clutching the ceremonial check after the winners were announced. When it was pointed out the song “Always and Forever” was much older than he was, Keemer smiled and said, “I’ve got an old soul.”

The second-place finisher, Briea Mason, earned a $500 prize. The third place contestant was Abby Gibbons, who was awarded $300.

The finals of the Calvert Idol contest capped off an ideal day at the 131st Calvert County Fair. In addition to a wonderful array of food and drink, the traditional 4-H Livestock auction and rides, there was whole lot of shaking going on with performances by the Diane Herbert Dancers, Julie Rogers Dance Studio dancers and the Southern Maryland Boot Scooters. There was even an impromptu display of Zydeco dancing. Magic and laughter were supplied by comedy illusionist Reggie Rice. Two popular alums of the Washington Redskins—defensive lineman Dexter Manley and offensive lineman Joe Jacoby—signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans at the Mark’s Electronics booth.

The fair wrapped up Sunday afternoon, Oct. 1. Unlike the previous two years, not a drop of rain fell the entire time the fair was open.

The fairgrounds off Route 231 remain a popular year-round venue for Saturday morning yard sales and other events. In early December the Calvert County Fair Board will partner with the Calvert Optimists to present a Christmas parade in Prince Frederick.
