ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Dr. Brenda J. Thiam made history when she joined the Maryland House of Delegates on Tuesday.
Accomplishments are nothing new to Dr. Thiam. She holds a PhD and has served as a special educator for more than 20 years. She secured a $100,000 grant for Washington County Public Schools and started a nonprofit to supportย residential and supported employment needs of adults with autism.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan appointed her to replace former District 2B Delegate Paul Corderman after he was appointed to the Maryland State Senate.
Her swearing-in ceremony marked the first time a black Republican woman has joined the Maryland General Assembly in its nearly 400-year history.
House Minority Leader Nic Kipke said he was excited to have Thiam as a colleague. “She is strongly committed to the citizens she represents and will do a fabulous job for the citizens of Hagerstown.”
Delegate Thiam said she’s ready to get to work. “I optimistically embrace the great work we’ll get done in the General Assembly as we work together collaboratively. I will always be guided by the fact that I’m a public servant who represents the constituents.”
