CALVERT COUNTY
MLK Days: A Community Art Event taking place January 18 through January 20 (11 am to 4 pm), located at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, 13470 Dowell Rd, Solomons, MD – Join us for an uplifting 3-day community art event celebrating the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drop in any time during the holiday weekend and work with visiting artist, Zsudayka Nzinga, as you help us create a beautiful collage on the gallery walls. Explore the artist’s solo show, then visit the artlab for added make and take projects. No registration needed- just drop in! Great for all ages. Admission is free!
Northern Calvert Little League Baseball & Softball Gear Collection on January 18 (11 am to 2 pm), located at North Beach VFD, 8536 Bayside Rd, Chesapeake Beach, MD – NCLL is collecting gently used baseball & softball equipment and uniform pieces. This is a great opportunity to pass along items that your players have outgrown to our next generation of super stars. We will accept bats, gloves, cleats, helmets, fielder’s masks, shoes, socks, belts, pants and jerseys/shirts. Bring your donated items to either North Beach Volunteer Fire Department or Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department anytime between 11 am and 2 pm on Saturday, January 18th. On February 10 and 11, parents of current NCLL players are welcome to come to the Northeast Community Center from 5-6 pm to shop for items. All items are free – first-come, first -served.
Pop-in with Poppie on January 18 (1:30 pm to 2:30 pm), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Make your Saturday afternoon memorable by coming to visit with our very own Pop Star “Poppie,” our Virginia Opossum. You can join the Poppie paparazzi in the museum lobby with one of our educational interpreters, learn all kinds of fun possum facts, and visit our Museum Store for possum fan gear. Since the welfare of our animals is our primary concern, Poppie’s ability to visit with her adoring public may occasionally be subject to change on short notice.
Sound Bath & Stars in Solomons on January 18 (6 pm to 7:15 pm), located at Solomons Mission Center, 14454 Solomons Island Rd S, Solomons, MD – Join us for a sound meditation journey. Erase stress and calm the mind to the sounds of Crystal Singing Bowls as a star scape crosses the ceiling above. Bring a yoga mat, blanket & pillow to make a comfy space to deeply relax as you zen to the ocean drum, chimes and more. Winter Lecture Series: Before the Base by Eve Love on January 19 (1 pm to 2 pm), located at North Beach Town Hall, 8916 Chesapeake Ave., North Beach, MD – Learn how the United States Navy came to own 6,000 acres in rural Southern Maryland. Lectures are sponsored by the Bayside History Museum, John Hanson Chapter NSDAR, and the Calvert Library.
Beyond the Displays: Artifact Stories on January 19 (1:30 pm to 2:30 pm), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Discover the history behind the emblem from a paddle wheel boat, the tools found in the blacksmith shop, and the Gov. R. M. McLane name board. Hear captivating stories about WWII’s impact on the Solomons community and uncover hidden pictures within the museum murals. National Day of Service: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King’s Legacy on January 20 (10 am to 3 pm), located at Calvert Marine Museum, 14200 Solomons Island Road S, Solomons, MD – Join us as we celebrate how each of us can give back to our communities. Reflect on Dr. King’s powerful “I Have a Dream” speech and take away a memento of inspiration. Discover ideas for small acts of kindness to pay it forward in your own community. Learn about local heroes making a difference, while creating a mosaic craft, and explore volunteer opportunities with nearby organizations.
