Leonardtown, MD — What a day to spend at the beach! Perfect weather brought crowds to Leonardtown Saturday for several major events. At the wharf park the Southern Maryland Board Club (SMBC) returned boat racing to Breton Bay. Then at 4 p.m. the annual Beach Party on the Square commenced, drawing a huge crowd. The event included the annual Running of the Balls at 7 p.m.

The American Power Board Association (APBA) sanctioned summer regatta featured several classes throughout the day and brought to the wharf park many old-timers who remembered when boat races were a summer-time weekend fixture.

The Beach Party on the Square created the atmosphere with a sand box for kids to play in, a volleyball court in the sand and the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department providing plenty of water in which to splash about. This year for the first time a hot dog eating contest was also held.

A number of vendors lined the town squares to display their wares and provide plenty of food and drink. And the town was filled with constant entertainment, including 25th Hour Band, Mermaid Alexis, a roaming juggler and a balloon twister.

Beach Party is sponsored by the Commissioners of Leonardtown and the Leonardtown Business Association.

The 5th Annual Running of the Balls was sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Lexington Park, Charlotte Hall and Leonardtown. The fundraiser has the dropping of 5,000 numbered balls down a chute. Those numbers were purchased in advance and the first 30 balls to settle at the bottom were winners of prizes, including the first-place of $1,500 cash.
