Solomons, MD  – A local tradition for nearly a quarter century—carrying a heavy wooden cross to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ was again held Good Friday, March 25 on Solomons Island. Despite earlier predictions of heavy rain, the solemn procession from St. Peter’s Chapel to Our Lady Star of the Sea drew a large group of participants.

Twelve Southern Calvert churches, allied under the banner SMILE Inc. (Service Makes Individuals’ Lives Exciting), conducted the march shortly before noon. Clergy members representing the churches took turns carrying the cross.

The procession was the prelude to a one hour service called The Way of the Cross.
SMILE Inc. serves residents of the community through such means as a food pantry. The organization also raises funds needed for services through a thrift store.
