LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Great Mills man is facing felony drug charges after deputies say a traffic stop in Lexington Park led to the discovery of 25 oxycodone pills in an unlabeled bottle and cash investigators believed was consistent with drug distribution.
Charlie Earl Horn, 51, of Great Mills, was arrested Aug. 20 and charged with distribution of a narcotic, possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to charging documents, a St. Mary’s County sheriff’s detective sergeant stopped a silver Honda Accord around 3:40 p.m. in the area of the 21300 block of Great Mills Road after the driver allegedly failed to come to a complete stop and was operating a vehicle while using a handheld cellphone.
Deputies identified the driver as Horn.
While officers were on the scene, a corporal allegedly saw Horn reach beneath his groin area, retrieve a green pill bottle containing white pills and attempt to conceal it in his right pants pocket.
Horn was then placed under arrest.
During a search, deputies reported finding an unlabeled green pill bottle containing 25 oxycodone pills. Oxycodone is a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance.
Cash Also Recovered
Charging documents state that another detective found an amount of U.S. currency in Horn’s front left pants pocket.
The exact amount of cash is not listed in the probable cause statement provided to the court.
Investigators wrote that the combination of the unlabeled pill bottle and cash was consistent with an intent to distribute the oxycodone.
The documents also reference an item investigators described as being used to smoke or inhale controlled dangerous substances, although no additional drug paraphernalia was reportedly found inside the vehicle or on Horn.
Horn was advised of his rights and invoked them, according to the charging documents.
He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.
Three Charges Filed
Horn is charged with:
- Felony distribution of a narcotic
- Possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
Court records show Horn was released Aug. 20 on a $1,500 unsecured personal bond.
A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 11 in St. Mary’s District Court.
