At 12:21 P.M. on Thursday, August 18, 2011, crews from Mechanicsville VFD Co. 2, Hughesville VFD Co. 2, Seventh District VFD Co. 5, Benedict VFD Co. 5, Hollywood VFD, Co. 5, and Mechanicsville VRS Co. 29 were dispatched for the reported house fire on the 39000 block of Miles Dotson Road. While responding, fire units noted the large black column of smoke and requested two additional tankers be dispatched which caused Leonardtown VFD Co. 1 and La Plata VFD Co. 1 to be dispatched. Crews quickly discovered that the fire was actually off of New Market Turner Road and that it was a recreational camper that was engulfed in flames. With the fire being much smaller than originally thought, all units were cancelled except for Mechanicsville VFD Co. 2, Hughesville Tanker 2, and the closest EMS unit. Firefighters made a swift attack on the fire which was quickly extinguished. Crews worked on scene for 53 minutes and the camper is considered a total loss.
