LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Maryland State Police troopers made 90 arrests for suspected drunken driving and issued more than 4,400 citations and warnings during enhanced patrols over the Halloween weekend, Oct. 31–Nov. 2, 2025.

The statewide operation focused on high-visibility enforcement along major corridors and in areas with heavy holiday traffic. Troopers increased patrols and conducted targeted traffic stops aimed at removing impaired drivers and addressing dangerous driving behaviors.

The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort, known as SPIDRE, recorded nine of the DUI arrests over the weekend, according to the agency. SPIDRE’s year-to-date DUI arrest total stands at 295, and the specialized team has recorded 5,150 DUI arrests since its inception.

Officials said the Halloween initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reduce crashes and injuries linked to impaired and aggressive driving. Throughout the enforcement period, troopers also cited motorists for speed, seat belt violations and other infractions that contribute to serious collisions.

State Police urged motorists to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service or calling a taxi, and reminded drivers that impairment can stem from alcohol, illicit drugs or certain medications. “Never drive impaired,” the agency said, adding that extra patrols will continue during upcoming holiday travel periods.
