St. Mary’s College of Maryland seniors Griffin Canfield and Shelby Perkins have been nominated as finalists for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the program offers grants to qualifying graduating seniors and recent bachelor degree graduates for research projects and English Teaching Assistant programs in countries outside the U.S. for one academic year.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is an extremely competitive scholarship program for graduating seniors, young professionals, and graduate students. Only about thirty percent of all applicants move on to the finalist stage.
At St. Mary’s College, Canfield, a native of Waldorf, Md., is studying political science and is pursuing an English Teaching Assistantship to Cyprus through the Fulbright Program. Perkins, a political science and Spanish double major and democracy studies minor from Bel Air, Md., has been recommended for a research project to India.
“Choosing to attend St. Mary’s College was the best decision I could have made,” says Canfield. “The small class sizes, exceptional faculty and staff, and beautiful location have made for a great college experience. Looking back over the last four years, there are a lot of people from the St. Mary’s community who helped me reach this point.”
“I’m extremely grateful for this possibility of returning to India to study what impassioned me during my study-abroad experience,” says Perkins. “I wouldn’t have attempted this opportunity without the support of the amazing staff members I worked with and professors I’ve had.”
