Two Transported To Trauma Center Following Head-On Crash On MD 231 Benedict Bridge

BENEDICT, Md. — Two people were seriously injured Sunday morning in a head-on crash on the Benedict Bridge over the Patuxent River, prompting a large emergency response from multiple jurisdictions.

The crash occurred Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, at approximately 10:12 a.m. on the Benedict Bridge along Prince Frederick Road, in the drawbridge section near the middle of the span.

First responders arriving on scene found two male patients who had exited their vehicles. One man suffered an apparent leg fracture and showed signs of shock, while the second man also sustained serious injuries.

Both patients were transported by ambulance to UM Capital Region Medical Center, a designated trauma center.

Traffic on the bridge was significantly disrupted during the emergency response.

The investigation remains ongoing.

  1. Both bridges over the Patuxent River are deathtraps. You can do everything right but have nowhere to go when someone else crosses the line.

  2. Drivers:
    Pay 100% attention to d-r-i-v-i-n-g!!
    It’s not hard. Whatever device that is distracting you will have that same information on it once you reach your destination. Unless someones vehicle malfunctioned…sending them into the oncoming traffic, this collision was totally avoidable. Both drivers are lucky to be alive. And if one was under the influence, I hope they impose a harsh punishment.
