WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing firearm-related charges after detectives recovered two handguns during the execution of a search warrant connected to a previously reported stolen firearm investigation, according to court documents.
Tareil Benjamin Moffitt, 19, of Waldorf, was charged with possession of a regulated firearm that was stolen and two counts of possession of a regulated firearm by a person under 21 years of age.
The charges stem from an investigation that began July 16, 2025, when deputies responded to a report of a stolen handgun from a residence in the St. Charles area. According to charging documents, the firearm — a Smith & Wesson Sigma .40 caliber handgun — had been stored in a case. The weapon was reported missing two days after it was last seen and was valued at approximately $600.
Investigators later received information from a citizen who reported that several juveniles had been harassing her and displaying firearms. During the investigation, detectives developed information linking Moffitt to the missing handgun.
On Feb. 6, 2026, members of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office executed a search and seizure warrant at a residence on Tulip Tree Court in Waldorf. The warrant authorized the search for firearms, firearm accessories, ammunition, cellphones and related evidence.
During the search, detectives recovered two handguns from a bedroom dresser. One firearm was identified as a Glock 23 .40 caliber handgun with an extended magazine containing 20 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition. The second firearm was a Smith & Wesson Sigma .40 caliber handgun containing ammunition. Authorities determined that the Smith & Wesson matched the serial number of the firearm previously reported stolen.
According to court documents, Moffitt acknowledged he had located the firearms in his younger brother’s room during the summer of 2025 and later began carrying one of the guns in various locations within Charles County. He reportedly stated he carried the firearm for protection and was aware he was not legally permitted to possess the weapons due to his age.
Moffitt was initially held without bond following his arrest on Feb. 6. After a bail review hearing on Feb. 9 before Judge Patrick J. Devine in Charles County District Court, he was released on his own recognizance.
A trial is scheduled for April 1, 2026, in Charles County District Court. An earlier officer scheduling hearing set for March 24 was postponed and reset, according to court records.
