College Park, MD- In a statement released by University spokesperson Katie Lawson, the University of Maryland will no longer play the Official Maryland State Song at sporting events, ” Maryland, My Maryland”; because of its ties to the Confederacy.
In the statement, Lawson said,” As part of the university’s efforts to reaffirm values as a campus community, we are assessing the songs played at Intercollegiate Athletic events. We are suspending the playing of “Maryland, My Maryland” to evaluate if it is consistent with the values of our institution at this time”.
