UPDATE: Cause Of Nanjemoy House Fire Determined Accidental, $150K In Damages Reported

NANJEMOY, Md. — Investigators with the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office have determined that an early morning fire that destroyed a Nanjemoy home was accidental and caused by improperly discarded smoking materials on the rear deck.

The blaze broke out just after midnight Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at a double-wide trailer in the 2100 block of Sandy Point Road. The six occupants—four adults and two children—escaped unharmed and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damages, including $125,000 to the structure and $25,000 to its contents. A working smoke alarm was present in the home.

Discovered by the residents, the fire prompted a single-alarm response from the Nanjemoy Volunteer Fire Department, with assistance from surrounding departments. Approximately 45 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes.

The fire was declared out by 1:10 a.m., with crews remaining on scene to extinguish hot spots and secure the property.
