fatal accident in southern maryland

LOTHIAN, Md. — A motorcyclist killed in a head-on crash Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025, on Route 4 in Lothian has been identified as 39-year-old David Martin Sweet Jr. of Lothian.

Anne Arundel County police said Sweet was operating a red Yamaha sport bike northbound in the southbound lanes near Route 258 around 7:55 p.m. when he struck a Cadillac head-on. The motorcycle was thrown into the woods and caught fire. Sweet died at the scene.

A 14-year-old girl from Owings, who was riding as a passenger, was flown to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore in critical but stable condition.

The Cadillac’s driver, a 24-year-old man from St. Mary’s City, was also flown to a hospital as a precaution and is in stable condition.

Calvert County deputies reported they had attempted to stop the sport bike minutes earlier, which began in Dunkirk, but the rider sped away. The pursuit was terminated before the motorcycle crossed into oncoming lanes. Deputies then came upon the crash site near Talbot Road.

Anne Arundel’s Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.

  1. Police always claim they “terminated the pursuit” before the crash when a police chase ends badly. Guess they expect people to believe them.

    1. Yea that’s BS, about 10 of them chased my brother on rt 4 from st Leonard to Lusby a few years ago before pinning him on his bike into a guardrail I watched the video of it

      1. How were you able to see that video? This sounds like a cover for an otherwise messy situation for police.

  2. This literally makes no sense. He’s northbound in southbound lanes… like for fun?!?!?? Did he catch fire or did the bike? Or both. The cops attempted to stop him but “terminated” the pursuit before he crossed into oncoming traffic and happened upon the accident moments later. That just feels fishy, I’d love to see dash-cam footage… it sounds like he was forced into oncoming traffic. Huh, anyone around to witness this??
