UPDATE: Dec. 31 at 9 a.m:
On Dec. 30, at approximately 6 p.m., James Aubrey Mattingly Jr., 42 of Leonardtown, was attempting to cross southbound Route 5 across from the Breton Marketplace shopping center.ย Mattingly was not crossing at a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing.ย He was struck by a 2004 Jeep Wrangler driven by Kelli Devine,ย 22 of Columbia, which was traveling in the right hand southbound lane. Mattingly, Jr. was flown to Prince George’s County Shock Trauma by Maryland State Police, Trooper 7, with life threatening injuries.ย He was then transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.ย He has since been upgraded stable condition.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Collision Reconstruction Team is continuing the investigation.ย Initial investigation reveals pedestrian error contributed to the collision.ย Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision. At approximately 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, police and fire units was dispatched to the area on State Route 5 by Ledo’s Pizza in Leonardtown for a man than was struck by a car on the roadway.
When police arrived they were advised that the man was in serious condition and that Trooper 7 was enroute to evacuate the patient. Police closed off the southbound lanes of Route 5. By 6:20 p.m. all traffic was stopped and police were investigating the identification of a vehicle that may have witnessed the incident.
The injured man was transported to Saint Maryโs Hospital to meet Trooper 7 for the evacuation.
During the crisis police controlled the traffic flow through Leonardtown by moving all traffic onto the northbound lanes.
