Hollywood, MD – An early morning fire at a residence in St. Mary’s County Friday, Feb. 10 caused damage to a home and attached garage, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze on Nelson Hill Way in Hollywood was discovered by the home’s occupants and reported at approximately 6:30 a.m.
“The cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction in a space heater located in the attached garage,” a deputy state fire marshal reported. “There was minimal fire extension into the home. The family was able to escape unharmed after alerting 9-1-1. The family is being assisted by family and friends.”
Twenty firefighters were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes. Damage to the two-story wood-framed house and attached garage is estimated at $80,000. The occupants were identified by the fire marshal’s report as William and Judy Smith.
