WELCOME, Md. — Eight-year-old Aidan is off the ventilator, breathing on his own and speaking with his family as he continues recovering from life-changing injuries suffered in a boating accident at Goose Bay Marina & Campground.
In a July 27 update, Aidan’s family reported that surgeons successfully closed all remaining wounds on both his left and right sides.
“Today brought some incredible progress, and for the first time in days, we have positive things to share,” the family wrote.
Aidan was struck by a boat propeller July 23, 2026, at the marina in Welcome. His family reported that the accident resulted in the amputation of his right leg and severe injuries to his left leg and hip.
He was flown from the scene by Maryland State Police Aviation Command Trooper 7 to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries.
Aidan had remained on a ventilator while doctors monitored his lungs and prepared him for additional surgery. His family reported Monday that he had been removed from the ventilator and was breathing without assistance.
The most meaningful moment came when relatives heard him speak.
“However, the best moment was hearing his voice and being able to talk to him,” the family wrote. “He does remember what happened, he knows what’s going on, and hearing his voice has been something we can’t even begin to put into words.”
Aidan’s care team at Johns Hopkins is now focused on helping him heal physically and mentally while preparing him for the long recovery ahead.
The family said donations will help cover ongoing surgeries, rehabilitation, prosthetic care and other expenses associated with helping Aidan return to an active life.
As of publication, the “Aidan’s Road to Recovery” GoFundMe had raised $95,652 of its $130,000 goal through 921 donations.
“This chapter does not define him, it is only the beginning of a different journey, and we know he is going to do amazing things,” the family wrote.
Aidan has been described as an energetic child who loves baseball, football, wrestling, riding his bicycle and making those around him laugh.
His family thanked the community for its continued prayers, donations, messages and support.
“Our family feels your love every single day, and we are forever grateful,” the update states.
