On the evening of May 8, 2011, around 11:19 p.m., the rescue assignment was request by police who were on scene of a single vehicle motor vehicle accident in the north bound lanes of route 5 in the area of the 29000 block of New Market. Ambulance 296 responded from Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad Company 29, Squad 2 from Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Company 2, Station 2, and paramedic ambulance 27 from Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department Company 2. The officers on scene stated that their were no injuries, just that the elderly driver simply was not acting right. Units arrived on scene to find a vehicle that had gone over the curb of the road, through the grass into a parking lot, and started back south bound in the north bound lanes when the vehicle came to a stop. Shortly following EMS arrival, they discovered that the driver was experiencing a diabetic emergency which is what is believed to have lead to the accident. EMS assisted the vehicle occupants on scene and then Ambulance 296 transported the driver as well as his female passenger to St. Mary’s Hospital. Units operated on scene for approximately 20 minutes.
