WALDORF, Md. — A fiery single-vehicle accident early in the morning of February 25, 2024, prompted the evacuation of a 23-year-old burn victim by helicopter to a trauma center.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene on Hatteras Circle near Holly Tree Lane at approximately 2:53 a.m. after receiving 911 multiple calls about a big fire and a loud boom.
The vehicle had left the roadway and crashed into an electrical transformer, resulting in a blaze that fully engulfed the vehicle and transformer. Firefighters, aided by a foam tanker, worked to control the fire.
The driver had already exited the vehicle by the time responders arrived at the scene. Due to the severity of facial burns, emergency medical services requested a MEDEVAC.
The landing zone for the Maryland State Police, Trooper 2 helicopter was secured at Sam’s Club. The patient was airlifted to MedStar Trauma Center for treatment.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Further updates will be provided as they become available.
