Lexington Park resident Victoria Gallagher, a freshman at St. Maryโ€™s College of Maryland, was recently named the 2005-2006 Raymond J. Faulstich Jr. Scholarship recipient by the College.

Gallagher, who graduated from Great Mills High School in 2005, earned the $1,000 scholarship based on her academic merit and financial need.

The St. Maryโ€™s County Scholarship program was begun at SMCM in 2000, and all St. Maryโ€™s County students who attend the College are considered for the scholarship. For the academic year 2005-2006, 10 St. Maryโ€™s County students are receiving a scholarship through the program. However, only one student is named the Faulstich Scholar.

The Faulstich Scholar was established in memory of Army private first class Raymond F. Faulstich Jr., who was killed in action while serving in Iraq in 2004. Faulstich was a resident of Leonardtown.

Gallagher was recognized by the St. Maryโ€™s Board of County Commissioners for her achievement at a recent commissionersโ€™ meeting. A commendation to Gallagher from the Board stated that it was her โ€œoutstanding, praiseworthy and dedicated commitment to community and country that has earned you the Raymond J. Faulstich, Jr. Scholarship.โ€

โ€œThis scholarship will help me to continue my education at St. Maryโ€™s,โ€ Gallagher said. She is the daughter of John and Carolyn Gallagher of Lexington Park.

St. Maryโ€™s College of Maryland is ranked one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review. With roots going back to 1840, SMCM is the stateโ€™s only public honors college, offering the academic excellence of a top private college with the openness and affordability of public education.
