Charles County firemen’s mascot waves to the cheering crowd during the Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association Parade Sunday, May 6.

Newburg, MD – The trucks, the boats other vehicles along with uniformed marchers comprised a great Southern Maryland springtime tradition Sunday, May 6 in Charles County. The units traversing Rock Point Road westbound during the early afternoon participated in the 71st Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemenโ€™s Association (SMVFA) Parade. The annual event, which drew a huge crowd to the Newburg Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department (Charles County Company 14), was part of the annual SMVFA Convention. The three Southern Maryland counties host the two-day event on a rotating basis.

Company 14 Emergency Medical Services Chief Andrew Spalding will serve as SMVFA president for one year. The parade began on an emotional note with the singing of the Star Spangled Banner by La Plata resident and Special Olympian Brandon Garner.
