LA PLATA, Md. — A Waldorf man has been issued a summons after police say he stole cash from registers during multiple incidents at the La Plata Walmart.

Jared Alexander Knight, 22, of Waldorf, is charged in Charles County District Court with three counts of theft of $100 to under $1,500 and one count of theft scheme of $100 to under $1,500.

According to charging documents, officers were called on April 21, 2026, to the Walmart on Drury Drive in La Plata for a reported theft not in progress. A Walmart loss prevention employee told police that a third-party vendor had stolen money from the store in March and provided several internal Walmart reports tied to the incidents.

The reports identified Knight as the suspect in three separate cash thefts on March 6, March 26 and March 27, 2026.

In the first incident, Walmart reported that $277.16 in cash was stolen on March 6. According to the report, Knight entered the store through the main entrance shortly before 9 a.m. and left about 15 minutes later. Loss prevention reported that cash was taken from point-of-sale registers.

A second incident was reported on March 26, when Walmart said $296 was taken from electronic registers. The report states that the suspect opened registers after customers completed transactions, took money and left the store without returning it.

The third incident was reported on March 27, when Walmart said $155 was stolen from a manual register. According to the report, the suspect scanned random items to gain access to the register, removed cash and placed it into his pocket.

The total reported loss across the three incidents was $728.16.

Charging documents state police reviewed video footage, receipts and other attachments provided by Walmart. An officer wrote that the videos showed Knight making unusual movements around open registers and looking around to see whether anyone was watching.

Police said Knight worked for a third-party company that supplies Walmart stores, which gave him access to the store’s electronic area. Investigators later contacted a representative from the company, who provided identifying information that police said matched Knight.

A summons was issued for Knight on May 20, 2026.

A preliminary inquiry hearing is set for July 6, 2026, in Charles District Court.
