WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing multiple weapons charges after a traffic stop in the Waldorf area led to the discovery of a loaded handgun inside his vehicle, according to court documents.
Kevin Lamont Poles Jr., 21, of Waldorf, was charged Feb. 10, 2026 with transporting a handgun in a vehicle, transporting a loaded handgun in a vehicle, and carrying a concealed dangerous weapon.
According to a statement of probable cause filed in District Court for Charles County, officers observed Poles driving at a speed greater than the posted 45 mph limit at approximately 11:44 a.m. on Feb. 10 near the intersection of Crain Highway and Billingsley Road.
Police initiated a traffic stop based on the observed violation. Authorities allege Poles did not immediately pull over and continued driving in a reckless manner, including excessive speed and unsafe driving behavior, before eventually stopping.
During the stop, Poles provided officers with a photograph on his cellphone of what appeared to be a Maryland provisional driver’s license. A Motor Vehicle Administration check determined he did not possess a valid driver’s license and instead only had a Maryland identification card, according to court records.
While securing the vehicle, officers observed what was described as a small bronze or gold cylinder in the driver’s door compartment consistent with handgun ammunition. When questioned, Poles acknowledged there was a handgun inside the vehicle and indicated it was located underneath the front passenger seat.
Officers searched the vehicle and recovered a Taurus handgun from the location described. The firearm was loaded with ammunition and immediately operable, documents state. Additional ammunition was also located in the driver’s door area.
Court records indicate Poles told officers he had recently retired from the military and did not possess a Maryland wear and carry permit. He reportedly stated he previously lived in Louisiana and believed a permit was not required to carry a handgun in a vehicle under Louisiana law.
Poles was transported to the Charles County Detention Center for processing and later released on his own recognizance.
A trial is scheduled for April 7, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
