With construction crews working on roadways thruoghout the county, TheBAYNET.com sought an update from Md. State Highway Administration’s District 5 Community Liason, Bob Rager.ย  Here’s what to expect in coming months:

LEONARDTOWN STREETSCAPE–ย  SHA will be wrapping up this project in June.ย Crews are currently working on the Fenwick St. sidewalk and landscaping, with paving taking place in late April or early May.

LEXINGTON PARK STREETSCAPE/ MD 246 (Great Mills Rd.)- Rager said this project is proceeding on schedule for completion in 2011.ย Installation of new water lines is nearly complete and work this summerย will includeย new sewer lines, stormwater controls and underground electric. With good weather, progress on the curb, gutter and sidewalks, beginning with the westbound side of MD 246,ย  may be seen.ย  Motorists shouldย continue to expect single lane closures in each direction, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and occasional night utility work, as needed, to minimize service impacts to area businesses and residences.

MD 237 (Chancellor’s Run Rd.)- The widening and realignmentย is on schedule for completion by the end of the year.ย This summer crews will focus on establishing new northbound lanes andย a median throughout the corridor. Motoristsshould expect new signals to become operational once the lane work is complete.

MD 236 (Thompson’s Corner Rd.)-ย Resurfacing should restart in April.ย  Rager said much of the patching was done before winter set in andย SHA expects to grind, resurface and restripe all of MD 236 by June.ย This, he added, is one ofย hour resurfacing projects in St. Mary’s County fundedย under the Americanย Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

Bridge Work inย Southern Md.- A $1.5 million federal stimulus contract will also fund the cleaning and repainting ofย 10 bridges this summer.

In St. Mary’s- MD 5 over Moll Dyersย Run, MD 5 over St. Mary’sย River, MD 5 over Hilton Run and MD 244 over Poplarย Hill Creek

In Calvert- MD 4 southboundย over Lyons Creek and MD 4, both north and southboundย over Hallย Creek

In Charles- MD 5ย noth and southbound over Zekiah Swamp and MD 257 over Mirvant railroad tracks near Newburg

Two bridges in Anne Arundel will also be refurbished by K and K Painting and Construction of Baltimore.ย  Traffic impacts areย expected to be minimal,ย as most of the work will take place underneath the bridges.ย ย

When asked about the many potholes in roadways throughout Southern Md., Rager said, “While SHA does not have jurisdiction over county and private roads, we’re certainly addressing potholes on the numbered (state) roads all across Md.”ย  To help expedite the process, Rager and the SHA encourages motorists to go online to report potholes here and suggsts providing as much location detail as possible will help crewsย respond quickly.

Motoristsย in these busy work zones are encouraged to “think orange”… slowย down, be alert for changing conditions and give workers a “brake’.ย  For more specific project information, click here and for safe driving tips visit www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
