100-Year-Old Barn In Calvert County Destroyed By Overnight Fire

SUNDERLAND, Md. – A large barn fire late Thursday night, June 6, 2024, in Sunderland is under investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The fire broke out around 11:45 p.m. on Wayside Drive near Solomons Island Road N. The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department, along with 54 firefighters, responded to the one-alarm fire.

The 50′ X 100′ barn, which was about 100 years old, was completely destroyed. The fire was well advanced throughout the structure when discovered by the owners, the Farrell Family.

Firefighters were able to control the fire within 50 minutes. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. The estimated loss to the structure and contents totals $100,000.

The area of origin was the interior of the barn. However, the preliminary cause of the fire remains under investigation.
