Bob Horton lets one fly.

ย Darin Young, the top-ranked dart player in the United States, attended the 20th annual TRICODA Open dart tournament, held last month at the Holiday Inn at Solomonโ€™s Island.

ย A portion of the proceeds from the Tri-County Dart Associationโ€™s (TRICODA) three-day event went to benefit Hospice of St. Maryโ€™s. The St. Maryโ€™s County Fraternal Order of Police lodge sponsored the โ€œLuck of the Drawโ€ event, with all proceeds going to Hospice.

ย โ€œLuck of the Drawโ€ was a fitting name. The Bay Net photographer John Douglass was selected to shoot against Darin Young in a game of 501. It was a quick match.

ย Dart-throwers from far and near attended. Dozens of portable regulation dartboard stands were hauled into the large conference rooms used for the tournament. Jim Black, owner of B&B Dart Supplies was a major sponsor of the event, as he has been for the previous 19 TRICODA tournaments.

ย Young, of Freeland, Penn., grew up playing โ€œWiddyโ€ darts, also know as โ€œAmerican darts.” Widdy darts are made of wood. They are fat in the middle, and have feathers on the end. The game is played on a special wooden โ€œWiddyโ€ board, though some unknowing bar owners buy the darts for โ€œstandardโ€ dart boards because they cost less.
