NORTH BEACH, Md. — The Town of North Beach, in coordination with the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), announced in a release on May 15 that it will cancel the June 5 First Friday event “out of an abundance of caution.”
According to the release, Communications Director Kevin Schmidt said the town has completed an initial review of a serious public disturbance that unfolded at the May 1 First Fridays event. Following an investigation, two minors were arrested for delinquent acts that fueled what law enforcement described as a “teen takeover” at the event, resulting in an unsafe atmosphere and negatively affecting overall public safety.
The town anticipates holding the next First Friday event on July 10, which is currently on the event calendar, following the completion and implementation of enhanced safety measures. The town reserves the right to cancel future First Fridays events should unforeseen public safety circumstances arise.
The release states that First Fridays remains an important community event that supports local businesses, community engagement and tourism, and the town remains committed to its safe and orderly return following the implementation of enhanced safety measures.
“The Town recognizes that this decision impacts participating vendors, local businesses, and community members who value and support First Fridays,” said Mayor Michael Benton. “Safety must remain the priority. The Town has taken the appropriate time to review the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident prior to making determinations regarding future event operations.”
Direct communication with vendors regarding event operations and future planning will resume next week. Public communication outlining updated safety and operational protocols will be provided in June.
North Beach asks for the public’s patience as these measures are finalized and implemented. Any questions about the investigation into the events are best directed to CCSO.
