At 3:05 p.m. Monday, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office Patrol Units responded to investigate a motor vehicle accident, involving a school bus and a pedestrian.
Preliminary investigation reveals the pedestrian, Briana Upchurch, 14, a freshman at Leonardtown High School, exited her school bus and was attempting to cross St. Andrew’s Church Road/Route 4 in the area of Sandra Lane, when she was struck by another school bus traveling Northbound on St. Andrew’s Church Road/ Route 4.
The victim suffered multiple injuries including a fractured skull, broken upper and lower jaws, broken collar bone, and severe abrasions to her chest.
The victim was flown by helicopter to Prince George’s Hospital where surgery was performed to remove her spleen.
She has been released from ICU and is currently listed in stable condition. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
