ST. LEONARD, MD (March 30, 2017) – Discover you inner Indiana Jones at “Discovering Archaeology Day (DAD)” at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM), April 22, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Each April, archaeological organizations throughout Maryland present archaeological programs for people of all ages. DAD highlights the thrill of discovery and the excitement of exploration through hands-on activities, exhibits, displays and tours.
Among the activities planned are “archaeology site-in-a-can” and “tinsmithing” at the table hosted by the Montgomery Parks and Archeological Society of Maryland (ASM) Mid-Potomac Chapter. Learn all about flintknapping from Howard County Recreation and Parks. At the Calvert County Planning/Historic District Commission table, there will be archaeological interpretation activities and a cataloging exercise. There will also be exhibits from Historic St. Mary’s City, ASM Central Chapter, Prince George’s Recreation and Parks Archaeology Program and the Huntingtown High School Archaeology Club.
The JPPM Education department will offer several arts and crafts activities including pottery mending and archaeology twister.ย Get your hands dirty while making your own discovery at the mini simulated archaeological dig inside the park pavilion.ย Children attending the event will receive a “scavenger hunt card.” When they have filled it in with enough stamps from exhibitors, they will earn a special prize.
