Laurel, Md. — A Montgomery County firefighter tragically lost his life on Saturday, January 11, 2025, while responding to a house fire in Laurel, Maryland. The 46-year-old, a 22-year veteran of the Montgomery County Fire Department, collapsed during the operation and was transported to White Oak Medical Center in Silver Spring, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. on Bradford Lane in Laurel. Prince George’s County firefighters initially responded to the blaze and requested mutual aid, prompting Montgomery County to dispatch an engine company from its Burtonsville station. During the firefighting efforts, an urgent call for advanced life support was made after the firefighter collapsed. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his condition.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Corey Smedley stated, “We were responding to mutual aid for a house fire, and during that house fire, an emergency happened within the emergency, where we had to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts to our firefighter.” County Executive Marc Elrich expressed the community’s grief, noting the inherent risks firefighters face daily.

The firefighter’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family members. A procession of firetrucks and police vehicles escorted his body to the medical examiner’s office in Baltimore, with fellow firefighters lining overpasses to pay their respects.

This tragic event underscores the dangers faced by first responders and the profound loss felt by the community when such incidents occur.
