CALIFORNIA, Md. – Residents from Lord Calvert Mobile Home Park are feeling a little more at ease after hearing from St. Mary’s Commissioner Mike Hewitt.
Hewitt spoke to the residents at the Crossroad Church in California, Maryland to discuss plans on closing the trailer park, which has 206 trailers.
Hewitt said the current owner has had multiple offers to sell the park but has not submitted any plans to the county to do that. He says if/when they do, it will be at least 18-24 months until anyone who currently lives there will be impacted.
Developers Cherry Cove discussed turning the site into housing. Conversations about that started back in 2012. Hewitt says the developers should release a decision on the park’s future by June 1st.
Residents who attended the meeting were concerned that they were going to be evicted soon with talks of development. They were also worried about the cost of living there after receiving letters letting them know their rent was going up. Now that they have this latest information, many are feeling much better about the timeline.
Other options for the trailer park include the owner fixing the water and sewer and leaving the park as-is. Another option would be to close the park, replace the water and sewer and build new apartments and townhouses. Hewitt said that option is very expensive.
Hewitt says the landowner must give a year’s notice as well as a year’s rent if the decision is made to close the trailer park.
