LUSBY, Md. – On August 3, 2024, Tyonte Ajee Raymond Thomas, 29, of Lusby, Maryland, led law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed chase through multiple roads in Calvert County. The pursuit, initiated by Deputy Contic of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, began after Thomas was observed committing multiple traffic violations, including driving at speeds exceeding 130 miles per hour.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Deputy Contic first noticed Thomas’s gray Ford Bronco swerving across the road on Tomahawk Trail before making an abrupt turn onto Gunsmoke Trail. Despite Deputy Contic’s efforts to pull him over, Thomas continued to drive recklessly, tailgating vehicles, crossing over the white line, and at times driving off-road. His erratic behavior included forcing several cars off the road as he weaved through traffic.
The situation became even more precarious when Thomas, during the high-speed chase, was in contact with the Calvert County Emergency Communications Center (ECC). According to official documents, the ECC was broadcasting live updates from Thomas, who reported that he was mentally unstable and was experiencing a manic episode. He claimed to be a veteran on his way to the hospital and asked law enforcement to back off.
Despite these claims, Thomas accelerated to dangerous speeds, eventually reaching 130 miles per hour on North Solomons Island Road. Multiple objects, including a brown paper bag and a Brillo scrub pad, were thrown from his vehicle during the chase. According to law enforcement, Brillo pads are commonly used as a filter in crack pipes, indicating possible drug use.
The chase ended when officers executed a precision immobilization technique (PIT), causing Thomas’s vehicle to spin out and come to a stop. Thomas was arrested after the stop, during which he exhibited signs of confusion and claimed he did not understand why he was being pulled over. Official documents state that Thomas acknowledged having prior DUI convictions and mentioned that he believed he was using cruise control as well as lane assist at the time.
Thomas was transported to Calvert County Health Medical Center for evaluation before being taken into custody. The case is currently pending, and Thomas faces multiple charges, including attempting to elude police, reckless driving, driving without a required ignition interlock device, and other traffic violations.
