LEONARDTOWN, Md. A 32-year-old inmate from Lexington Park was charged with second-degree assault on a fellow detainee following an incident at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, according to charging documents filed in District Court.

Court records identify the defendant as Lucas Tyler Marstaller, who was detained after deputies reviewed surveillance footage showing him allegedly throwing food on another inmate following a verbal exchange. The incident occurred inside a detention cell around 4:30 p.m., prompting staff to call in sheriff’s deputies for further investigation.

Deputy Blaine Gaskill of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to the facility and spoke with a supervising corrections officer who stated that Marstaller had assaulted another inmate by flinging food from his tray. The assault was reportedly unprovoked, although Marstaller told deputies the altercation began after the other inmate had stared at him and re-entered his cell in an aggressive manner. Surveillance video confirmed that the two individuals exchanged words before the victim exited and re-entered the cell, after which Marstaller threw food.

The victim declined to provide a statement to investigators.

Marstaller was formally charged with second-degree assault of a Department of Corrections employee under Maryland criminal law. That charge is classified as a misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of incarceration and a $2,500 fine.

During a bail review hearing held July 10 before District Judge James Tanavage, the court ordered Marstaller held without bond and committed him to the Maryland Department of Health after he was found incompetent to stand trial. He is scheduled to appear again in court for a status review in December.
