LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A Lexington Park man who fled from the St. Mary County Sheriff’s Office deputies after they attempted to arrest him on an outstanding warrant has pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and received a suspended jail sentence.
Victor John Lee Scotland, 37, of Lexington Park, pleaded guilty to resisting or interfering with arrest in St. Mary’s County District Court before Judge Robert B. Riddle.
According to charging documents, deputies were patrolling the Great Mills Road area on March 19, 2026, when they observed Scotland walking near a Family Dollar store. Deputies recognized Scotland from prior law enforcement contacts and believed he was the subject of an active arrest warrant.
Court records state deputies confirmed the warrant and Scotland’s identity using a Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration photograph before approaching him outside the Family Dollar.
According to charging documents, deputies attempted to place Scotland in handcuffs when he allegedly fled on foot. A brief pursuit followed before deputies located him in a parking lot on Sale Center Drive, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Following the arrest, Scotland was charged with resisting or interfering with arrest, obstructing and hindering, and failure to obey a lawful order. He was initially held without bond.
Court records show Scotland entered a guilty plea to the resisting arrest charge during an April 21 hearing before Judge Robert B. Riddle.
Judge Riddle sentenced Scotland to nine months in jail, suspending all but 34 days. The remaining charges of obstructing and hindering and failure to obey a lawful order were placed on the stet docket, meaning the prosecution was indefinitely suspended unless the case is later reopened under Maryland law.
Court records also show Scotland was placed on three years of unsupervised probation.
