Watermen And Artists Unite For Leonardtown Wharf’s First Crab Basket Christmas Tree

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A new holiday tradition is drawing visitors to the waterfront this season as the Waterman’s Association of St. Mary’s County debuts its first Crab Basket Christmas Tree at Leonardtown Wharf.

The project began in early fall as a fundraiser to support public oyster bar replenishment. Supporters purchased baskets for $50 or buoys for $30, decorated them, and returned them ahead of the Nov. 15 deadline. As the return date approached, the association’s Facebook page filled with posts highlighting completed pieces — including custom artwork from Social Coffeehouse and detailed maritime scenes painted by local artist Mary Lou Troutman.

“The next time you enjoy a fried oyster, just know you played a part in helping replenish our local public oyster grounds,” said a representative from the Waterman’s Association of St. Mary’s County.

On Nov. 23, watermen and volunteers came together at the wharf to stack and secure the decorated pieces into a tiered tree, creating a waterfront display that reflects both local heritage and artistry.

During the Annual Oyster Festival in October, volunteers staffed a booth where visitors could buy materials or learn more about the project. Organizers said the community response remained strong throughout the season, from small businesses sponsoring baskets to families taking part in painting events.

The Crab Basket Christmas Tree will remain on display throughout December. The Waterman’s Association encourages residents and visitors to stop by for photos and to explore the unique designs contributed by neighbors, shops and artists across St. Mary’s County.
