LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Commissioners, at the May 12 meeting, recognized National Skilled Nursing Care Week, honoring the dedication and compassion of those who provide critical care to residents across the community.

Commissioner Mike Hewitt, who presented the proclamation, reflected on the demanding nature of the profession, sharing a personal connection to the field.

“This is special to me. My daughter-in-law is a nurse,” Hewitt said. “What’s unique about this profession is, a lot of people work 8 to 5 Monday through Friday… She does 12-hour shifts, 7 to 7… And sometimes… she’s called in on multiple shifts… It just is very stressful on these people. God bless you.”

National Skilled Nursing Care Week, observed May 10 through May 16, recognizes the essential role skilled nursing facilities play in supporting individuals and families. The official proclamation states that these facilities “play a vital role in providing quality care and support to individuals in our community.”

The proclamation further acknowledges the professionals who serve within them — including nurses, therapists, caregivers and support staff — noting they “tirelessly strive to enhance the quality of life and well-being of residents through their expertise, empathy, and personalized care.”

This year’s theme, “Moments in Bloom,” highlights how everyday interactions can create meaningful experiences for residents and their loved ones.

“National Skilled Nursing Care Week… serves as a time to recognize and celebrate the essential contributions of skilled nursing care providers in ensuring the health, dignity, and comfort of individuals in their care,” Hewitt read.

The commissioners formally designated May as National Skilled Nursing Care Week in St. Mary’s County, commending providers for their “dedication, professionalism, and compassion” and expressing appreciation for their “unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of residents and enriching our community.”

A Living Connection To Community History

Sharon Nicholson, human resources director at the St. Mary’s County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, emphasized the meaningful relationships formed between staff and residents, describing long-term care facilities as places where history and human connection come to life.

“This is actually one of my favorite weeks, because it really speaks to the partnership between the staff and the residents… They’re not just there waiting to pass along. They’re actually there, vibrant, they are living very full lives,” Nicholson said.

She added that residents offer a unique window into the region’s past.

“One of our greatest history elements are people. And if you sit down and you talk to them, you actually can have stories come to life,” Nicholson said. “I hated history when I was young, but, man, you put me next to somebody who is older, it will come to life for me.”

Nicholson also stressed the importance of continued investment in long-term care resources.

“We need long-term care resources… so that they can remain vibrant and relevant in their community for as long as they possibly can,” she said.
