Maryland Ranks Seventh In Fuel-Cost Savings For Electric Vehicles

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Buying an electric vehicle (EV) often comes at a higher initial cost compared to traditional vehicles. Even with their popularity surging in recent years, owning an EV is a costly endeavor if you buy it new. Luckily, it looks like Maryland drivers are getting a great return on their investment. Climate Crisis 247 used the DOE and AAA to compare which states saved the most money on fuel, and the Old Line State is high on the list of consumer savings.

Washington took the No. 1 spot, with an estimated annual savings figure of $1,246. California and Oregon are second and third on the list, respectively, so it would appear that the West Coast offers the best bang for your buck when you make the switch to driving an electric vehicle.

Maryland also ranked high on the list, coming in at seventh place with an estimated annual savings of $855. Climate Crisis 247 lists the average price of gasoline in Maryland at $4.44 per gallon, while the average price of electricity for EV charging falls at $0.34 per kilowatt-hour.

The comparison becomes even clearer in favor of electric vehicles when the total average cost is compared. Climate Crisis 247 lists the estimated annual cost of EV charging in Maryland at $1,069, while gas sits at about $1,924 — a stark difference.

As the price of a gallon of gas rises throughout America, more drivers may consider switching to an electric vehicle to cut costs. Buyers have never had more options than today. Between Ford, General Motors, Tesla and many more brands, there are a plethora of cars to choose from that run entirely or partly on electricity.

Are Electric Vehicles Popular In America?

Electric vehicles currently account for only around 10% of new cars sold in the United States, but that could change drastically over time. Stats from Visual Capitalist reveal that citizens of other countries buy EVs at much higher rates than Americans. Almost every new car purchased in Norway is an EV, while Chinese citizens buy EVs around 53% of the time.

Reducing pollution across the globe is an uphill battle that requires everyday people to change various aspects of their lifestyles. Driving an electric vehicle is a noteworthy way to minimize your environmental impact and save money on gas in the long term.

The initial cost of buying an EV still creates uncertainty among many drivers who are in the market for a new car, but the cost of electric vehicles is dropping every year, and an influx of used models makes it easier than ever to own an EV in 2026.
