SCOTLAND, Md. — A summer job does not have to mean being stuck indoors or counting down the hours until your shift ends.

This summer, Camp Riverview in Scotland, Maryland, is giving Southern Maryland residents the opportunity to spend their days on the Potomac River, living in cabins, mentoring young people and building unforgettable memories — all while earning competitive pay.

Operated by the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, Camp Riverview is a 200-acre waterfront overnight and day camp serving children ages 8 to 13. Located along the Potomac River, the camp combines outdoor recreation, environmental education and leadership development in an immersive summer setting.

The camp is currently hiring Senior Camp Counselors, Camp Counselors and Support Staff for the 2026 summer season, with pay ranging from $20 to $35 per hour. Positions also include room, board and meals during overnight camp sessions.

All positions require full-week overnight commitments, with staff members living on-site and helping guide campers through daily activities from wake-up to lights-out.

Campers spend their summer immersed in nature while building friendships, confidence and leadership skills through hands-on experiences and outdoor adventures.

Programs include environmental science activities, boating opportunities and nature-focused learning experiences led by skilled instructors in a supportive environment.

For staff members, the experience offers more than a traditional seasonal job. Employees gain leadership experience, work closely with youth and spend the summer outdoors in one of Southern Maryland’s most scenic waterfront settings.

“What happens in summer impacts a lifetime. We are more than a summer job. We are the summer experience,” DPR Director Thennie Freeman told The BayNet. “From building skills to making friends to becoming a lifelong mentor, DPR is the place to learn, to grow, and to be. Come join us!”

In addition to competitive wages, staff members receive leadership development opportunities, on-the-job training and the chance to create lasting friendships and professional skills that extend beyond the summer season.

The positions are seasonal, with applicants required to complete background checks and pre-employment screenings as part of the hiring process.

DPR said it is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive work environment and encourages people with disabilities to apply. Accommodations are available during the application and interview process upon request.
