Grace Elizabeth Carter-Tyer, 81, of Hollywood, MD, passed away on June 5, 2026, at St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, MD.
Grace was born on December 3, 1944, In Leonardtown, MD, transitioned peacefully into eternal, rest with her husband by her side. She was the daughter of the late Mary Catherine Carter and Joseph Ignatius Carter. Grace was a faithful member of Gospel Tabernacle of Prayer and, for many years, attended Potter House Apostolic Churches.
Grace married the love of her life, James Aloysius Tyer, on July 22, 1989, in Bushwood, MD. They shared 36 glorious years together- traveling, cooking, and cherishing every moment spent in each other’s company. Their favorite song was The Seven Spanish Angels by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson.
She took great pride in tending her flower garden, where beautiful blossoms flourished under her loving care. She also enjoyed gospel music and “Boots on the Ground.” Grace treasured time spent with her Aunt Lillian Young, visiting often and reminiscing about the “good old days.” She shared a special bond with her cousin, Robert Young, who visited frequently; they prayed together and loved talking about church. Grace also had a devoted brother, John Daniel Carter, who was always by her side.
Grace was preceded in death by her two sons, Joseph Aloysius Carter and John D. Carter; her siblings, Mary Virginia Brown of Leonardtown, MD, Elsie C. Lawrence of Callaway MD, James Leroy Carter of Hollywood, MD, Joseph F. Carter of Clements, MD, and Thomas X. Carter of Clements, MD.
She is survived by her husband, James Aloysius Tyer; her sister, Ann Berry of Lexington Park, MD, her brothers; Ernest S. Carter (Martha) of Abell, MD, John Daniel Carter (Gloria) of Waldorf, MD, William Rowland Carter (Carolyn) of Brandywine, MD, and her beloved Aunt Lillian Young. She also leaves behind her godchild; Josiah Emmanuel Young, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who loved her dearly.
Family will receive friends for a Visitation on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 10:00am to 11:00am with a Funeral Service beginning at 11:00am at Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Rd. Leonardtown, MD 20650. Interment will take place at Charles Memorial Gardens, 26325 Point Lookout Rd. Leonardtown, MD 20650, immediately following services.
