Mike Mummaugh shows Leonardtown Planning and Zoning Commission members his plan for his building on town square.
Leonardtown, MD — A 50-year-old building on Leonardtown square is being remodeled and enlarged. The Leonardtown Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday approved a site plan for the former home of Baileyโs Restaurant and for the past 20 years the Corner Critters pet store.
The buildingโs owner Mike Mummaugh of Seymour Properties, LLC and Paragon Builders told the planners that the owner of Corner Critters is retiring and closing the store and that presented an opportunity for renovation and repurposing.
In addition to the pet store, the current 2,850 square-foot building at 22680 Washington Street contains eight apartments on the second floor. Mummaughโs plan is to remodel the downstairs for a restaurant or other retail shops, add a third floor and create five two-bedroom loft apartments on the top two floors. The second floor would have 10-foot ceilings and the third floor apartments would have nine-foot ceilings.
Town Manager Laschelle McKay told the commission members: โGoing up a story is really what we have been promoting.โ
Since the number of apartment units is being reduced additional parking isnโt required for the project.
Mummaugh presented a plan showing a completely renovated brick front faรงade. He said the block side would be retained and painted.
The planners unanimously approved the site plan during an unusually busy session. Only three of the five commission members were in attendance. Chairperson Jean Moulds and member Jack Candella were not present. Vice Chair Heather Earhart ran the meeting.
