Calvert resident Roseanna Vogt was sworn in Tuesday, Dec. 27 to serve another term on the Maryland Commission for Women. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Prince Frederick Library and presided over by Calvert Clerk of the Circuit Court Kathy Smith [D].

Vogt, who is the director of the Circle of Angels Initiative Inc., was reappointed to state panel by Gov. Martin Oโ€™Malley [D], pending the approval of the Maryland Senate. Vogt was originally appointed to the commission six years ago by Maryland Speaker Michael E. Busch [D-District 30].

Prior to her appointment to the 23-member Maryland Commission for Women, Vogt served 10 years on the Calvert County Commission for Women.

Both panels advocate for measures designed to eradicate domestic violence. Vogt recalled the commission played a role in getting legislation passed to require the removal of guns from the homes of individuals who have received court-issued restraining orders.

ย Vogt said the Maryland Commission for Women is involved in an effort to encourage inmates at Marylandโ€™s correctional facility for women in Jessup to make an effort to turn their lives around once they are released. ย โ€œWe want the women to make good on the outside,โ€ said Vogt.

The Maryland Commission for Women was established by the Maryland General Assembly in 1971 and has as its mission โ€œpromoting the social, political and economic quality of Maryland women.โ€

The commission serves the state government in an advisory capacity and receives staff support from the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

Other Southern Maryland members of the Maryland Commission for Women are: Cara Tenebaum (Calvert), Lynn R. Fitrell (St. Maryโ€™s) and Darlene Breck (Charles).
