โGood ideas are not adopted automatically. They must be driven into practice with courageous patience.โ โ Hyman Rickover
Thatโs exactly what the medical doctor told my patient who has been suffering with headaches for 10 years. Clearly what the MDs were doing wasnโt helping so why not try another option? Well she finally had it with the drugs, injections and no improvement so she did the unthinkable. She ignored her doctor and then her husband, who apparently doesnโt believe in chiropractic like itโs a strange religion or we donโt exist like Leprechauns.
Donโt get me wrong. I have plenty of OBGYNs and MDs that refer patients with me personally because we respect and appreciate what each other do. But it is more than a few bad apples that have been spoiling the bunch.
Over 20 years I have heard that statement from allegedly educated professionals like doctors of all types, nurses and staff, physical therapists and many other people outside of the healthcare field. Never have I said, โDonโt see an Ortho or MD or therapist.โ In fact I feel that I would be doing a disservice to my patients.
My job is to help the patient feel better and regain their health any way possible. Whether that is at my office or someone elseโs doesnโt matter. You do. I encourage working on patients with the medical community for a โteamโ approach to your health. No one office can do it all.
So why say โdonโt go to a chiropractor?โ Are doctors scared we may help a patient where they couldnโt? Do they think a chiropractor will hurt someone? I have heard stories on how chiropractic hurt someone only to find out it held no truth or plausibility.
I know a patient who had a friend pop her back, because โshe knew what she was doing,โ and cracked my patientโs rib. Boys are popping backs in the locker room and kids walk on their parentsโ back. The list goes on and on but they have no idea what theyโre doing to the spinal system.
I can admit there are risks with chiropractic as there are with any form of treatment. Thereโs a reason chiropractic should be left to the Chiropractor. I donโt stitch up a cut. They have medical doctors and nurses who do that. Drugs can cause deaths and side-effects. Surgery can go wrong too, but no one wants to harm a patient.
I think itโs a tough way to build a practice. My malpractice insurance is so low, under $2000/yr; it proves we are the safest form of treatment available. Chiropractic has the highest rate of satisfaction among all providers too.
