MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center nurse Sharon Perez, BSN, RN, was honored with a 2013 Visionary Award from the Washington Area Women’s Foundation (WAWF). The award, which was presented at the WAWF’s annual Leadership Luncheon and 15th anniversary celebration, recognized Sharon for her “exceptional work and dedication to help put women and girls on paths to prosperity,” particularly her determination to overcome obstacles and her drive to help others.
“Sharon is an excellent nurse and an integral part of our team,” said Associate Chief Nursing Officer Kim Elliott, MSN, RN. “We’re delighted that the Washington Area Women’s Foundation has recognized her with this award, and we know she will continue to be a role model for women and girls in her community.”
The Washington Area Women’s Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in the region by ensuring that they have the resources they need to achieve economic security and thrive. The foundation’s Visionary Awards honor people who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to ensuring a brighter, more prosperous future for the area’s women and girls through their vision and dedication.
While pursuing her nursing certification from Prince George’s Community College, Sharon participated in the Next Step program, which “aims to equip students with skills, experiences, and practices needed to advance their careers and wages.” She went on to receive a scholarship to Notre Dame of Maryland University, where she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. She plans to begin work toward a Master’s degree in the field next year. Sharon delivered the WAWF Leadership Luncheon’s keynote address before being surprised with the award, which was given by her mentor Cecelia Knox, Next Step’s program director.
