LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — The Newtowne Players are set to bring a bold and energetic adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice” to the stage May 1-17 at the Three Notch Theatre.
Adapted by Kate Hamill from the classic novel by Jane Austen, this version reimagines the beloved story with a fast-paced, contemporary twist. Known for its humor and theatricality, the adaptation breathes new life into Austen’s timeless tale of love, class and societal expectations.
At the center of the story is Elizabeth Bennet, a sharp-witted and independent young woman navigating the pressures of family, marriage and reputation in 19th-century England. Her evolving relationship with the reserved and often misunderstood Mr. Darcy unfolds alongside a colorful cast of characters, including the outspoken Mrs. Bennet and Elizabeth’s four very different sisters.
To give audiences a glimpse into the story’s romance and tension, the 2005 film adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice” offers a visual introduction to Elizabeth and Darcy’s journey, where first impressions and misunderstandings gradually give way to a deeply emotional love story.
The trailer captures the sweeping atmosphere, social pressures and chemistry at the heart of the story, helping set the stage for the live performance audiences will experience this May.
Hamill’s adaptation is widely recognized for its high-energy staging, physical comedy and occasional breaking of the fourth wall, offering audiences a fresh and accessible take on a literary classic. The production balances humor with heartfelt moments, while maintaining the core themes that have made “Pride & Prejudice” a lasting favorite for generations.
The show features a full ensemble of local performers, highlighting the depth of talent within the Southern Maryland theater community. Under the direction of Megan Rankin Herring, the cast brings a dynamic and modern sensibility to these iconic roles, creating a production that appeals to both longtime fans of the novel and newcomers alike.
Performances will take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. at the Three Notch Theatre, an intimate venue known for its close connection between performers and audiences. The setting allows for an immersive theater experience, where the energy and emotion of the performance can be felt up close.
