UPDATE – Monday, May 16
Solomons, MD – State officials reported Monday morning, May 16 that three local men—ranging in age from 20 to 22—were safely removed from a boat that was taking on water Saturday evening, May 16. The incident occurred in the Patuxent River in an area between the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge and Broomes Island.

According to Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) spokeswoman Candy Thomson, authorities received a call of a boat “in distress” around 9:42 p.m. The vessel was a 23-foot Bayliner. Thomson said the boaters did not have a flashlight, did have a flare gun, which no one on board knew how to work; and a cell phone that was only half-charged. The occupants communicated with authorities by way of the phone.

Maryland State Police (MSP) Trooper 2, which happened to be flying over the vicinity, conducted an aerial search and located the distressed vessel. None of the men ended up in the water, no injuries were reported and Thomson said it is not known if there were life jackets aboard the boat. The vessel was towed to an area pier.

Thomson told The BayNet that no formal investigation was conducted following the rescue.

In addition to local rescue squads and the MSP, three NRP officers responded to the incident.

UPDATE 11:12 p.m.

Solomons, MD – Three boaters were rescued from the Patuxent River Saturday evening, May 14 after the 23-foot Bayliner they were in reportedly began taking on water. The incident was reported shortly before 10 p.m. and prompted a brief but intense search in an area north of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. The boaters communicated with authorities via cellphone.

A Maryland State Police (MSP) helicopter did an aerial search and located the boat. Rescue boats from Solomons and Ridge were able to bring the three aboard the distressed vessel to safety. The Bayliner was towed to a pier.

In addition to the MSP, officers from Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) and the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene. Police are conducting an investigation of the incident to determine factors that led to the incident.

The names of the boaters and their conditions have not been released by authorities at this time.

Three boaters have been safely rescued from the Patuxent River. The vessel is being towed to a pier. Police are conducting an investigation of the incident.

The Maryland State Police helicopter has located the distressed vessel and rescue crews are bound for the scene.


Solomons, MD – Sources are reporting a water rescue is underway on the Patuxent River near the Thomas Johnson Bridge. The call was received shortly before 10 p.m.

Reports indicated the vessel is a 23-foot bayliner with four people on board. The boat is reportedly located Two miles north of the bridge. 

Rescue boats from Calvert and St. Mary’s counties are bound for the scene, a Maryland State Police helicopter is during an aerial search and the Maryland Natural Resources Police are also involved.

Sources said crews are using thermal imaging and continuing to locate the vessel.
