CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — On December 8, a student at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School removed what appeared to be a handgun from his back pack during dismissal. Another student observed the gun and called attention to it.

A school employee and a Charles County Sheriffโ€™s school resource officer โ€“who was already at the schoolโ€“quickly retrieved the gun which turned out to be an airsoft replica gun. The studentโ€™s parents were contacted and the school resource officer, along with school administrators, will complete an investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the case will be presented to the Charles County Stateโ€™s Attorneyโ€™s Office for review.

The Sheriffโ€™s Office is committed to student safety and is reminding parents to talk with their children about bringing inappropriate items to school and the dangers and possible consequences of these actions.

The Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office (CCSO) was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) in 2001 and has since earned the highest rating of Excellence. Established in 1658, the CCSO is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the United States.
